DRESDEN, Germany, March 10, 2022 — Fraunhofer Institute for Photonic Microsystems IPMS (Fraunhofer IPMS) developed the MACsec Controller IP-Core, which implements the latest Ethernet security standards to provide authentication, integrity, and encryption of data between different nodes of a local area network. The MACsec can be used with Fraunhofer IPMS’ LLEMAC IP core, as well as any other Ethernet MAC IP core, and in stand-alone mode.

SCHRAMBERG, Germany — TRUMPF expanded its location in Schramberg, Germany, with a 14,000-sq-m building that provides offices for management and administration, a laser application and development center, a health center for employees, and a visitor area.

MUNICH — Laser communication company Mynaric was selected for three technology development projects related to quantum communications. The projects are part of the second phase of the QuNET initiative funded by Germany’s Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). Mynaric’s technology development will be co-funded with a total amount of up to €5.6 million ($5.9 million) between 2023 and 2025.

PALO ALTO, Calif. — PsiQuantum opened its U.K.-based advanced R&D facility at STFC’s Daresbury Laboratory in the northwest of England. The effort is backed by £9 million in funding from the U.K. government’s Department for Science, Innovation, and Technology (DSIT), and it gives PsiQuantum access to one of Europe’s largest liquid helium cryogenic plants.

Glossary
quantum
The term quantum refers to the fundamental unit or discrete amount of a physical quantity involved in interactions at the atomic and subatomic scales. It originates from quantum theory, a branch of physics that emerged in the early 20th century to explain phenomena observed on very small scales, where classical physics fails to provide accurate explanations. In the context of quantum theory, several key concepts are associated with the term quantum: Quantum mechanics: This is the branch of...
metrology
Metrology is the science and practice of measurement. It encompasses the theoretical and practical aspects of measurement, including the development of measurement standards, techniques, and instruments, as well as the application of measurement principles in various fields. The primary objectives of metrology are to ensure accuracy, reliability, and consistency in measurements and to establish traceability to recognized standards. Metrology plays a crucial role in science, industry,...
