Optical Redox Imaging Safely Monitors Heart Cell Development

MADISON, Wisc., Sept. 5, 2024 — An optical imaging tool for monitoring the growth of human heart cells known as cardiomyocytes (CMs) could lead to a reproducible means to generate human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes (iPSC-CMs) for biomanufacturing. The imaging technique, along with various synthetic hydrogel substrates, was developed by a team at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. CMs derived from iPSCs are a promising tool for combatting heart disease, which is a leading cause of death worldwide. IPSCs can be used to improve drug screening platforms, build accurate disease models, and develop...Read full article

    fluorescence lifetime imaging
Fluorescence lifetime imaging (FLIM) is an advanced imaging technique that provides information about the lifetime of fluorescence emissions from fluorophores within a sample. Unlike traditional fluorescence imaging, which relies on the intensity of emitted light, FLIM focuses on the time a fluorophore remains in its excited state before returning to the ground state. This fluorescence lifetime is influenced by the local environment and can be used for various applications in biological and...
    autofluorescence
Autofluorescence refers to the natural emission of fluorescence exhibited by certain biological structures or molecules when exposed to light. Unlike fluorescence that results from the application of external fluorophores or dyes, autofluorescence arises intrinsically from endogenous molecules present in tissues or cells. Key points about autofluorescence: Endogenous emission: Autofluorescence occurs due to the presence of naturally fluorescent molecules within biological samples, such as...
