Kopin Details Shift in Corporate Direction
NEW YORK, Jan. 19, 2024 — Kopin Corporation has unveiled plans to transition its business to focus on becoming an application-specific optical solutions provider. The company said it will additionally target advanced software-defined AI-enabled microdisplay technology, as it moves from its position as what it called a microdisplay solutions provider.
Kopin's offerings are developed for the defense, enterprise, consumer, and medical products markets. The company has introduced a new logo, tagline, and website as part of the brand’s revamp.
In tandem with the new corporate direction, this week the company introduced its NeuralDisplay architecture developed in collaboration with MIT's Computer Science & Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. Designed for AR/VR applications, the technology is intended to integrate eye-tracking with machine learning to dynamically adjust micro-OLED displays based on unique factors such as eye dominance, pupillary distance, and direction of focus in real time.
As a provider of microdisplay solutions for military applications, camera displays, and wearable consumer technology, Kopin stepped up its presence in the consumer wearables market during the last decade. Following losses related to challenges in this market, the company made a number of executive hires aimed at bolstering its military applications business. More recent executive- and director-level hires brought defense sector experience to Kopin.
According to CEO Michael Murray, Kopin's direction will aim to leverage the company's history of innovation to pursue opportunities in developing application-specific optical solutions and advanced software-defined AI-enabled microdisplays. The shift in strategy, the company said, aligns Kopin's capabilities with an evolving technological landscape and market through the development of innovative, human-centric, application-specific solutions.
