Global eyewear firm EssilorLuxotica has reached an agreement to acquire an 80% stake in Heidelberg Engineering, a provider of diagnostic solutions and technologies for clinical ophthalmology. EssilorLuxotica is the parent company to ophthalmology equipment suppliers Essilor Instruments and Satisloh, as well as a number of eyewear brands including Ray-Ban and Oakley, as well as lens manufacturers including Essilor, Varilux, and Transitions.

Heidelberg Engineering brings extensive technological and scientific expertise in OCT, real-time image processing and analytics, large-scale data analysis, and digital surgical navigation to serve medical professionals, scientists, and researchers across a broad range of ophthalmic areas.

According to EssilorLuxotica’s executive team, the acquisition bolsters the company’s position in the medical technology space and serves to enhance the doctor and patient experience. Heidelberg Engineering's technologies are used for early detection of sight-threatening conditions like glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration. The company will continue to operate under its existing brand.

The transaction is expected to close in the second half of 2024.

Glossary
optical coherence tomography
Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a non-invasive imaging technique used in medical and scientific fields to capture high-resolution, cross-sectional images of biological tissues. It provides detailed, real-time, and three-dimensional visualization of tissue structures at the micrometer scale. OCT is particularly valuable in ophthalmology, cardiology, dermatology, and various other medical specialties. Here are the key features and components of optical coherence tomography: Principle of...
lens
A lens is a transparent optical device that focuses or diverges light, allowing it to pass through and form an image. Lenses are commonly used in optical systems, such as cameras, telescopes, microscopes, eyeglasses, and other vision-correcting devices. They are typically made of glass or other transparent materials with specific optical properties. There are two primary types of lenses: Convex lens (converging lens): This type of lens is thicker at the center than at the edges....
ophthalmology

Ophthalmologists are medical doctors who specialize in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of eye disorders and diseases. They are trained to provide comprehensive eye care, including medical, surgical, and optical interventions. Key areas within ophthalmology include: General eye care: Ophthalmologists perform routine eye examinations to assess visual acuity,...
