Network specialist Ciena Corp. said it has entered into an agreement with Teraxion Inc. of Quebec City, from whom it will purchase high-speed indium phosphide and silicon photonics technologies and underlying intellectual property, in a cash deal worth about $32 million. The technologies are key enablers of Ciena’s WaveLogic coherent optical chipsets. To date, Ciena said it has shipped over 75,000 high-speed coherent line interfaces. The acquisition reflects Ciena’s development of operations in Canada, home to its largest employee base, including more than 50 percent of its R&D team, said Scott McFeeley, senior vice president of networking platforms.
