China's Semitronix Group Acquires PIC Design Firm Luceda Photonics
SMTX Technologies Singapore, part of Semitronix Group, has acquired Luceda Photonics, a Belgian provider of PIC design software. The acquisition provides Luceda with the scale, investment, and complementary capabilities to accelerate its goal of enabling “first-time-right” photonic chip designs and supporting high-yield mass production on a global scale, the company said.
More broadly, the acquisition creates an end-to-end offering in the integrated photonics market, combining Luceda’s strengths in photonic chip design with Semitronix’s electronic design automation, data analytics, wafer testing, and yield optimization capabilities for PICs production.
Luceda will continue to operate independently, with its headquarters remaining in Belgium.
Following the acquisition, Luceda plans to expand its product and customer-facing teams while expanding its footprint across Europe, China, and North America, company CEO Pieter Dumon said. In a post on LinkedIn earlier today, Luceda co-founder and CEO, Erwin De Baetselier, said that he was stepping aside from his role as CEO.
Luceda was founded in 2014 as a spin-off from Photonics Research Group of Ghent University and B-PHOT Brussels Photonics. The company established a subsidiary office, Luceda Shanghai Software and Technology Co. Ltd, in Shanghai in 2021. The Chinese market, the company said at the time, is the second most important market within the company's portfolio.
Luceda has established numerous partnerships with PIC developers, including Alcyon Photonics, Wave Photonics, VLC Photonics, Alter Technology, Applied Nanotools, Luxitelligence, and others.
SMTX Technologies Singapore Pte. Ltd. is a Singapore-registered entity that is part of Semitronix Corporation, a publicly listed technology company headquartered in Hangzhou, China.
