MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Aug. 12, 2021 — Sensing and perception systems company Aeva is collaborating with Nikon Corp. The companies will focus on bringing frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) 4D lidar with unique micron-level measurement capability to high-precision industrial automation and metrology applications.

The partnership seeks to develop next-generation industrial solutions using Aeva’s 4D lidar technology. Aeva and Nikon expect to accelerate adoption of joint products in industrial automation, metrology, and manufacturing applications.

“This marks a milestone for Aeva’s expansion strategy beyond autonomous driving applications,” said Soroush Salehian, co-founder and CEO of Aeva. “We are excited to work closely with a leader like Nikon in an established market with massive growth potential as we accelerate our expansion into industrial applications, targeting product release in 2025.

“By leveraging our common core lidar chip architecture that we’ve already developed for automotive applications, we can bring industry-leading costs to volume scale, which we believe has the potential to upend the growing industrial automation industry.”

metrology
Metrology is the science and practice of measurement. It encompasses the theoretical and practical aspects of measurement, including the development of measurement standards, techniques, and instruments, as well as the application of measurement principles in various fields. The primary objectives of metrology are to ensure accuracy, reliability, and consistency in measurements and to establish traceability to recognized standards. Metrology plays a crucial role in science, industry,...
lidar
Lidar, short for light detection and ranging, is a remote sensing technology that uses laser light to measure distances and generate precise, three-dimensional information about the shape and characteristics of objects and surfaces. Lidar systems typically consist of a laser scanner, a GPS receiver, and an inertial measurement unit (IMU), all integrated into a single system. Here is how lidar works: Laser emission: A laser emits laser pulses, often in the form of rapid and repetitive laser...
fmcw lidar
FMCW lidar stands for frequency-modulated continuous wave lidar. It is a type of lidar (light detection and ranging) technology used for remote sensing, distance measurement, and 3D mapping. FMCW lidar operates on the principle of sending out laser beams that are modulated in frequency and measuring the time it takes for the reflected light to return to the sensor. How it works: Frequency modulation: FMCW lidar emits laser beams with a continuously changing frequency. The laser...
