ABB Robotics Opens Test Center

ABB Robotics opened a random bin picking test center in Jönköping, Sweden, to develop automated pick-and-place solutions using 3D-enabled random bin picking technology. The center is part of ABB’s wider strategy to accelerate flexible automation in small- and medium-size enterprises. The ability to recognize an item in any orientation allows parts to be randomly placed in a bin or on a pallet, removing the need for the parts to be manually pre-sorted or arranged.

At ABB’s new test center, customers and partners will be able to test different configurations and scenarios before implementing them in a real environment, helping minimize the risks, time, and costs traditionally associated with creating bin picking applications and also reducing disruption during installation. The team will use RobotStudio, ABB’s leading simulation and programming tool to model processes before physical cells are created for final testing and refinement.

Glossary
machine vision
Machine vision, also known as computer vision or computer sight, refers to the technology that enables machines, typically computers, to interpret and understand visual information from the world, much like the human visual system. It involves the development and application of algorithms and systems that allow machines to acquire, process, analyze, and make decisions based on visual data. Key aspects of machine vision include: Image acquisition: Machine vision systems use various...
bin picking
Bin picking, also known as bin picking automation or bin picking robotics, refers to the automated process of selecting and retrieving individual objects or components from a bin, container, or bulk storage system using robotic systems equipped with sensors, cameras, and manipulation capabilities. Bin picking is a challenging task in automation and robotics due to the variability in object shapes, sizes, orientations, and positions within the bin. Object recognition and localization: Bin...
pick-and-place
Pick-and-place refers to a process or technique used in manufacturing and assembly operations to automate the handling and positioning of components or objects. In a pick-and-place system, a robotic or automated mechanism is employed to pick up individual items from a source location and accurately place them in a desired position or location, typically as part of a larger assembly process. Components handling: Pick-and-place systems are commonly used in industries such as electronics...
