Lucent To Cut 1000 Jobs
NORTH ANDOVER, Mass., April 5 – Lucent Technologies Inc. said it expects to lay off 1000 workers statewide, double the amount of cuts previously announced. The company gave a 60-day notice to 725 union-represented workers at its Merrimack facility here, and 75 managers will be notified by the end of the month, said William Price, a spokesman for the Murray Hill, N.J.-based company.
"The manufacturing capacity at Merrimack has remained greater than demand," Price said. "We took a wait and see in January, and now we're taking the necessary action to bring the work force in line with our cost reductions."
