Optical Amplifier Market Seen Hitting $7 Billion by 2004

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Jan. 9 -- Global demand for optical amplifiers in telcom applications will more than double to $7 billion in just three years, according to a report from market researcher Strategies Unlimited. The report predicts that a market worth $3 billion in 2000 will jump to more than $7 billion in 2004, a compounded growth of 22 percent per year. The study, Optical Amplifiers: Raman, EDFA, EDWA, and SOA, Market Review and Forecast-2001, analyzes the market for optical amplifiers and their associated pump lasers for different applications, device types, wavelengths, and data rates.
The report notes that Optical Amplifier emerged as a commercial product in the early 1990s and is now widely used, but the market is entering a new phase. At the high performance end of the market, erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) will be complemented by new Raman pump blocks. While EDFAs will continue to thrive in a variety of applications, the emergence of Raman amplification will substantially change the design of EDFAs, as well as the mix of pump laser products needed to drive the amplifiers.
The report profiles 29 suppliers of optical amplifiers and 30 suppliers of pump lasers around the world, including market share estimates for each sector. It is available from Strategies Unlimited for $8,450, contact Strategies Unlimited +1 650 941-3438 (voice) or +1 650 941-5120 (fax), e-mail at info@strategies-u.com, or the company's web site at http://www.strategies-u.com.
