Coherent Creates Photonics, Telecom Groups

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Sept. 8 -- In a move to strengthen its potential to offer new technologies in the telecom and photonics markets, Coherent Inc. has formed two new groups: Coherent Photonics Group and Coherent Telecom-Actives Group.
The Coherent Photonics Group is a conglomeration of Coherent's Auburn Group, Laser Group and Semiconductor Group, and will be directed by Coherent's Executive Vice President, John Ambroseo. Vittorio Fossati will leave his position as head of Coherent's Semiconductor Group to head Coherent Telecom-Actives Group, which will introduce Coherent's Optically Pumped Semiconductor devices and the development and acquisition of new technologies and products to the telecom marketplace. Coherent's Tampere operation in Finland will supply the epitaxial wafer growth for the Photonics and the Telecom-Actives Groups.
The creation of the Photonics and Telecom-Actives Groups is a direct result of our commitment to better focus our efforts and speed up the development of our key initiatives in our Electro-Optics operating segment, including telecom, said Bernard Couillaud, president and CEO of Coherent.
