StockerYale to Construct Fiber Optic Preform Facility

SALEM, N.H., Sept. 6 -- StockerYale Inc. will construct a new facility specifically designed to house three Modified Chemical Vapor Deposition (MCVD) systems the company recently purchased. The facility will be located next to StockerYale's headquarters in Salem, N.H. The MCVD systems will produce specially made fiber optic preforms that will allow for the fabrication of specialty optical fiber with built-in photonic functions, the company said.
The purchase of these MCVD systems also includes state-of-the-art fiber characterization and optical measuring equipment that will allow us to become a fullyintegrated manufacturer of specialty optical fiber, said Alain Beauregard, the company's president and chief technology officer. The photonic qualities of specialty optical fiber are a direct result of the optical characteristics fabricated into the preform. With the MCVD systems we will have the ability to not only produce leading-edge specialty optical fiber but will have the ability to develop custom-tailored specialty optical fiber for our customers.
The cost of the new facility and the new MCVD systems was not disclosed, but was labeled as the company's largest capital expenditure to date, StockerYale said.
