Nanoscience, Organic Photonics Headline SPIE Optics + Photonics 2024

Returning to the San Diego Convention Center, the SPIE Optics + Photonics trade show will run Aug. 18-22 with the exhibition portion of the conference set for Aug. 20-22. Attendees can expect over 1900 presentations in a multitude of photonics-related fields. Optics + Photonics 2023 will comprise sessions in over 40 conference topics, with plenary talks, technical presentations, and industry courses offered with professional development opportunities and an onsite job fair.

Optical engineering, nanoscience, and organic photonics will feature as the three symposia for this year’s program. Fourty-seven technical conferences will welcome guests in technology areas spanning optical fibers, holography, remote sensing, OLEDs and LEDs, plasmonics, and more.

Just as the previous year, seven plenaries will feature at this year’s conference, commencing Sunday evening, Aug. 18, with a lineup chaired by SPIE president and director of the University of Arizona’s BIO5 Institute Jenifer Barton. Scheduled speakers are Joseph Berry of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory and Alexandra Boltasseva from Purdue University and the Quantum Science Center at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Other plenaries will run through Aug. 21 and end with a session highlighting the field of attosecond science led by 2023 Nobel Prize winner in physics Anne L'Huillier.

Companies spanning the gamut of optics and photonics technologies have confirmed their attendance for the multiday industry exhibition and showcase. Exhibiting companies include Hamamatsu, Ansys, Edmund Optics, Thermo Fisher Scientific, Reynard, and many more. Companies from the Americas, Europe, and Asia will be present on the show floor. The exhibition aims to promote dialogue and idea sharing around components, devices, and systems. New and enhanced commercial offerings in waveguides, filters, cameras and imaging systems, lasers, and more will be on display.

In the lead-up to the exhibition, companies are sharing product and preview announcements on the show’s webpage, accessible via www.spie.org. New product offerings can be found, with additional exhibition information.

Special and debut events run through the entirety of the conference, for industry members in all disciplines. These will include a LGBTQ+ meetup for LGBTQ+ and allies in the photonics community on Aug. 20, a black in photonics meetup Aug 18, and a launch party that will be held Aug. 20 for the launch of SPIE Selections, a new book series from SPIE press.

SPIE members will be eligible to attend the Annual General Meeting of the SPIE Corp. on Tuesday evening, Aug. 20. The meeting will include a report from the president as well as a Q&A with SPIE officers. The meeting will also yield 2024 election results from the society. In addition, the SPIE Awards Banquet and Celebration will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. on Aug. 21. Tickets are required for this event.

SPIE Optics + Photonics 2024 begins Aug. 18 in San Diego. Registration remains open for SPIE members and nonmembers.
