Alcatel Joins OMM on Photonic Cross-Connects

DALLAS, Aug. 29 -- In a move to increase capacity needs and further its presence in the microelectromechanical systems market, Alcatel has partnered with OMM. OMM, a supplier of MEMS-based photonic switching components, will supply three-dimensional MEMS technology for Alcatel's next-generation CrossLight photonic cross-connects. The deal calls for Alcatel to make an unspecified investment in OMM.
CrossLight systems currently use two-dimensional technology. OMM's 3-D MEMS-based subsystems will extend the capacity of the system to more than 4000 x 4000 ports, said Alcatel. Thanks to an adaptable architectural design, The CrossLight system is able to take advantage of new photonic technologies within its matrix to as new applications evolve. Alcatel's CrossLight photonic cross-connect will let users and service providers accomplish a fast time-to-market for high-capacity and high-quality services.
