ams OSRAM Receives €300M, Details Refinancing Plan
Austria-based ams OSRAM will receive more than €300 million ($317.3 million) in funding over the next five years from Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action and the Free State of Bavaria. The Important Project of Common European Interest (IPCEI) funding will support the company in making its own investments in the R&D of innovative optoelectronic components at its Regensburg location, which is home to ams OSRAM's Osram Opto Semiconductors GmbH.
The company said that its main investment beyond activities supporting R&D pursuits will target manufacturing processes, creating 400 jobs. ams OSRAM will invest in new cleanroom and laboratory facilities for research, development, and pilot production, which it said will be equipped for working on various innovative applications such as UV-C LEDs for disinfection and near-infrared emitters for lidar for autonomous driving, among others.
Per recently announced IPCEI funding, ams OSRAM will create an assembly line for 8-in. wafer production. The company said its first pilot line for the purpose is currently underway. Courtesy of ams OSRAM.
Another focus, according to the company, will be microLEDs for use in display technology. Last month, ams OSRAM
detailed a strategic business restructure and identified microLEDs specifically as an area in which it plans to continue its pursuit of market opportunities.
