FITEL to Double Production of 1480 nm Pump

CLINTON, N.J., July 26 -- FITEL Technologies Inc. will manufacture twice as many 1480 nm pump lasers by December in a move by its parent company, Furukawa Electric Co. Ltd., to keep up with the growing demand for wavelength division multiplex (WDM) systems. Furukawa Electric will invest about $92 million to bring production of the laser, which is used in WDM systems, up to 100,000 pieces per month.
The North American WDM market grows as the market for Internet access grows said FITEL. Integration of WDM systems into intra-office networks in the metro market continues to increase the demand for optical amplifiers as well, FITEL said.
