ZEISS Reaches Major Milestones in Vision Correction
The Medical Technology Business Group of ZEISS has announced the recent completion of 1.5 million treatments with its SMILE technology and the production of its one-thousandth VisuMax femtosecond laser.
SMILE, or Small Incision Lenticule Extraction, uses a femtosecond laser system with high precision and speed to reshape the cornea. The laser creates a small lens-shaped piece of corneal tissue, known as lenticule, inside the cornea. The surgeon then removes the lenticule through a small incision at the front part of the eye. This reshapes the cornea and corrects the refractive error.
Focused on corneal surgery, the VisuMax femtosecond laser treats ametropia with a minimally invasive procedure. The device creates a thin, lenticular disc in the cornea, which is extracted by the surgeon through a small incision in the corneal surface also created by the laser. The virtually intact corneal surface minimizes disruption to the biomechanics of the cornea.
