ESI Gets Honeywell Order for Laser Drilling Tools

PORTLAND, Ore., Mar. 30 -- Electro Scientific Industries Inc. (ESI) has received an order for multiple units of its Model 5200 Laser Drilling systems and system upgrades from Honeywell's Advanced Substrate Technology & Interconnects (ASTI) business. The units will ship to Honeywell's manufacturing facilities in Costa Mesa, Calif., where they will be employed in volume production of advanced semiconductor packaging substrates for the growing telecommunications, consumer products and networking markets.
According to ESI, the UV laser drilling technology will enable Honeywell's ASTI business to drill vias in layered pairs and bond ply material where the smallest via is 25 µm or below. The company said this will allow Honeywell to increase density while shrinking the package size.
