Zeiss Reports Revenue Growth Despite Currency Effects
Carl Zeiss Meditec AG recently reported revenue of €673.7 million (about $878.8 million) in the first nine months of its fiscal year, an increase of 3.8 percent from the same period in the previous year when adjusted for exchange rates.
The company’s earnings before interest and taxes were €92.1 million (about $119.1 million), resulting in earnings per share falling by 13.5 percent compared to the first nine months of the previous fiscal year.
Revenues were roughly level in the microsurgery (€293.9 million, about $380.4 million) and ophthalmic systems (€266.5 million, about $344.9 million) segments, driven by sales of surgical microscopes, visualization systems and refractive vision correction lasers.
The surgical ophthalmology segment of the company increased revenues by around 22 percent, from €92.7 million (about $119.9 million) in the first nine months of fiscal 2013 to €113.3 million (about $146.6 million) in the first nine months of fiscal 2014. The company attributed the growth in part to the acquisition of Aaren Scientific, which specializes in intraocular lenses.
