Cancer Imaging Expert Joins University of Houston

The University of Houston will use a $2 million recruitment grant from the Cancer Prevention & Research Institute of Texas to hire Dr. David Mayerich, who will conduct quantum cascade laser (QCL) and knife-edge scanning microscopy research to improve cancer diagnostics.

Badri Roysam, chairman of Houston’s electrical and computer engineering department, said Mayerich’s work will involve developing new methods for imaging clinical tissue biopsies and tumors in 3-D at fine resolution and massive scale.

Mayerich is currently a Beckman Fellow at the University of Illinois. While he works with breast cancer, Mayerich said his research is applicable to many tumors and disease types. He said his goal is to bring high-performance imaging and modeling to biomedical researchers and clinicians.

“We need to provide biomedical researchers with the ability to collect and process terabyte-scale datasets on their own desktops,” he said.
