British Military Signs Contract with German Laser Group
The British Ministry of Defence has signed a contract with Rheinmetall AG to secure laser light modules for its soldiers.
Part of a comprehensive program to modernize the British infantry, the €33 million (about $45 million) contract will supply soldiers with Rheinmetall’s laser light module (LLM) Vario-Ray. The device, referred to as the “laser-light module mark 3” by the British Armed Forces, will enable them to detect, identify and mark targets.
A component of Germany’s Gladius expanded future soldier system, the device is mounted to the rifle or pistol and uses various light sources to detect and mark targets. Rheinmetall, a military technology group, will supply tens of thousands of these devices to the Ministry of Defence.
The British military already uses Rheinmetall’s LLM-01 lasers, which feature target markers and target illuminators that operate in the visible and IR spectrums.
