Visualant Adds Partner to Speed Commercialization

Visualant Inc. has formed a strategic partnership with Intellectual Ventures (IV) to advance, through product applications and intellectual property development, the commercialization of its ChromaID technology, the company said Thursday.

ChromaID is a light-based identification and measurement technology that collects light patterns using a panel of LEDs to test virtually any material, aerosol or color using spectral pattern matching. Its ability to be used in the field has the potential to replace traditional spectral analysis and other costly lab-based methods of identification, authentication and diagnosis, Visualant said. The product won a 2013 Prism Award for photonics innovation from Photonics Media and SPIE at Photonics West in February 2013 in the Green Photonics category.

Under the partnership, IV will provide access to its global network of inventors and engineers to develop applications for ChromaID, including those in medical diagnostics and food and drug safety. IV has also agreed to file a minimum of 10 patents covering these new applications, Visualant said.

All of Visualant’s currently available ChromaID Scanner and software development kit (SDK) inventory has been allocated and are scheduled to ship the week of Nov. 18, the company said. Additional ChromaID Scanners and SDKs are being manufactured and scheduled for availability in early 2014.
