UArizona Presents Power of Optics to Congressman

The world of photonics was on display for Rep. Ron Barber at the University of Arizona College of Optical Sciences on Wednesday, providing an eye-opening showcase of technology made possible by light.

As part of the National Photonics Initiative (NPI), Barber met with students, faculty, and local business leaders to discuss the benefits of photonics and the role that the University of Arizona is playing in the field.

“It was a privilege to host Rep. Barber today and demonstrate the integral role optics and photonics play in making our everyday lives possible,” said Thomas Koch, dean of the College of Optical Sciences. “We appreciate the congressman’s interest in our program and the work he has done on behalf of the university and our district. Today was a wonderful opportunity to showcase how the College of Optical Sciences prepares young talent to thrive professionally and grow Arizona’s economy.”

Launched this spring by an assembly of photonics organizations, the NPI seeks to unite experts from industry, academia and the government to advance photonics R&D, grow the US economy and improve national security (See: Photonics Societies Launch National Initiative). A key part of the effort is to educate members of congress on the vital role photonics plays in homeland security and the US economy (See: Congressman Tours UCF Laser Facility).

“It is an honor for me to join the University of Arizona in learning about the National Photonics Initiative,” Barber said. “New opportunities and investments in photonics offer the potential for economic growth and job development and will help position the United States as a global technology leader.”
