Thin Solar Concentrator Prototype
HyperSolar Inc., a solar cell
power output technology company, has completed a prototype design of its thin solar
concentrator. The company’s goal is to develop an inexpensive and thin solar
concentrator to replace expensive solar cells in conventional flat solar panels.
The initial prototype is designed to provide 300 percent light magnification, but
the company aims for at least 400 percent in its final commercial product. HyperSolar
said that when successfully commercialized, a concentrator delivering 400 percent
light magnification could reduce the number of cells in a solar panel by 75 percent,
dramatically lowering the cost per watt of solar electricity. The commercial version
of the concentrator is expected to be approximately 1 cm thick.
