Molex Buys Luxtera’s Active Optical Cable Biz

High-speed interconnect provider Molex Inc. announced that it has completed the acquisition of Luxtera’s Active Optical Cable (AOC) business, including its Blazar and other derivative optical transceiver products.

Silicon CMOS photonics provider, Luxtera will transfer all aspects of its existing and future ACO business to Molex, including current QSFP+ 40 Gb/s Ethernet and InfiniBand products and customers. The acquisition will immediately add QSFP active optical cables to Molex’s portfolio of active optical connectivity products.

Luxtera’s Blazar can support up to 4000 m and offers a low power consumption of 20 mW per Gb. For more information about the product, visit: www.photonics.com/Article.aspx?AID=36468.

The acquisition will also include an exclusive agreement for Luxtera to develop and supply advanced chip sets for future Molex products that are based on Luxtera’s silicon photonics technology. The companies will work together on future product planning to provide customers with interconnect solutions at 10-, 14-, 25 Gb/s, and faster data rates.

The acquisition is expected to boost Molex’s share of the global fiber optic assemblies market.
