Co-Inventor of the Nd:YAG Dies
LeGrand G. Van Uitert, co-inventor of the Nd:YAG laser, died June 3. He retired in 1989 after working as a research chemist and materials scientist at Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill, N.J., for 37 years. A member of the National Academy of Engineering, he received more than 100 patents and numerous awards, including those from IEEE, the American Chemical Society, the American Physical Society and the Optical Society of America.
