T-Ray Sublicenses Technology to TeraView

Medical device company T-Ray Science Inc. has granted a sublicensing agreement to TeraView Ltd. of Cambridge, UK, to use certain continuous-wave (CW) terahertz technology originally patented by MIT and licensed exclusively to T-Ray.

TeraView offers a range of advanced terahertz spectrometers, including the CW Spectra 400, which uses the sublicensed technology. The system generates a continuous wave that features a tunable frequency emitted and detected via a set of proprietary, fiber-fed terahertz photomixers. It is suitable for spectroscopy and imaging applications on a range of objects and materials.

Under the terms of the agreement, T-Ray will collect royalties on the sales of the spectrometer and other products that use its CW generation in the US.

Its platform terahertz imaging technology is suitable for many applications, including homeland security; the detection of explosives and ceramic knives; process control in the paper, plastics, petrochemical and pharmaceutical industries; and medical imaging for the detection of skin and other cancers.

In addition, terahertz waves are an alternative to scanning methods including high-frequency ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging and near-infrared imaging.
