Luxtera Announces Optical Collaboration

Luxtera Inc., a silicon CMOS photonics manufacturer, has announced its collaboration with Watertown, Conn.-based Siemon, a network cabling solutions provider.

Based on the former company’s 40 Gbp/s single-mode fiber tranceivers, the latter company has introduced its Moray active optical cabling (AOC) product family. The product’s introduction has expanded the company’s extensive portfolio of copper and fiber data center solutions.

By collaborating with the California company, it has enabled its customers to work with a single data center solutions provider to achieve high performance and extended reach optical interconnect at a lower cost than legacy multimode fibers.

The former company was selected for its ability to utilize silicon CMOS photonics technology and high performance, low-cost single-mode fibers. Utilizing an integrated optoelectronic chip with a directly attached fiber and a micro-packaged laser, the CMOS photonics “fiber-to-the-chip” technology enables the Moray cabling device to distance restrictions associated with existing vertical-cavity surface-emittinig laser (VCSEL) and multimode fiber solutions.
