CCD, CMOS Rivalry Heats Up, Report Claims

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., April 13 -- Advancements in CMOS (complementary metal-oxide semiconductor) technology have altered the image sensor market, according to a report from market researcher Frost & Sullivan. The report says that the while the total image sensor market is growing at between 11 and 14 percent, the CMOS market is growing at a much faster rate than the market for CCD (charge-coupled device) sensors.
According to the report, advancements in sensor design and performance have made such applications as PC videoconferencing cameras, digital still cameras, biometrics systems, handheld communication units and automotive on-vehicle components increasingly plausible. These applications are driving market growth.
