Georgia Tech, Solvay Collaborate on OLEDs

Solvay of Brussels, Belgium, a chemical and pharmaceutical group, has signed a three-year commitment with Georgia Institute of Technology’s Center for Organic Photonics and Electronics (COPE) to fund research in organic LEDs (OLEDs). A material platform developed by COPE enables OLEDs to be deposited over large areas by ink-jet printing and to be patterned using standard photolithography. The Atlanta center’s researchers discovered that exposing the material to ultraviolet radiation hardens it, making it insoluble and stable under high temperatures, and enabling them to build a multilayer solid-state device. The deal has been estimated at $3 million.
