Freescale Acquires Seaway Networks
AUSTIN, Texas, Aug. 23 -- Freescale Semiconductor Inc. has acquired the assets of Seaway Networks Inc., an Ottawa, Canada-based private fabless semiconductor supplier of content processing technology for the data networking industry. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Freescale, based in Austin, makes embedded semiconductors for the automotive, consumer, industrial, networking and wireless markets. It became a publicly traded company in July 2004 after more than 50 years as part of Motorola Inc.
Most of Seaway's work force -- about 40 employees -- will be transferred to Freescale's new Ottawa Technology Center. Employees at the Ottawa site will work with other Freescale design centers to advance the company's communications processor roadmap and data-plane processing technologies, Freescale said.
Freescale plans to integrate Seaway technologies into its PowerQUICC communications processors. Specifically, it said the acquisition will help enable it to expand its leadership position in the growing market for converged transmission control protocol/Internet protocol (TCP/IP) applications.
