NanoDynamics Inc. Subsidiary Wins Contract for IR Windows Material

Nanomaterials manufacturer NanoDynamics Inc. of Buffalo, N.Y., has announced that its subsidiary, MetaMateria Partners of Columbus, Ohio, has received a $750,000 Phase II Small Business Innovation Research award from the US Navy to fabricate nanosize ceramic particles for use in the production of transparent windows for military applications.

The goal is to develop a high-quality optical material that is durable enough to protect infrared sensors on missiles and aircraft from harsh operating conditions, including the impact of debris at supersonic speeds. MetaMateria will synthesize nanoparticles of yttria. The materials could have broad applications in military and commercial markets, according to NanoDynamics CEO Keith Blakely.
