Osram Obtains Government Contract to Develop OLEDs

To demonstrate the potential of white organic LEDs to conserve energy in commercial and residential applications, Osram Opto Semiconductors of San Jose, Calif., has been awarded a $4.65 million grant from the US Department of Energy. The three-year project supports the government's plan for new, cost-effective, low-emission technologies. The company will accelerate its development of solid-state lighting, which is based on polymer organic LEDs, and will use proven techniques to enhance the efficiency of polymer light production while investigating other methods of producing full-spectrum white light. It will fabricate a 12-in.2 prototype based on the use of multiple discrete 3-in.2 devices, produced on glass substrates.
