SRC and NC State Announce IP Partnership

RALEIGH, N.C., Dec. 27 -- The Semiconductor Research Corporation (SRC) and North Carolina State University (NCSU) have announced a joint licensing and commercialization partnership focused on inventions arising from SRC-sponsored research programs at the university.

Historically, in return for sponsoring research programs at a university, SRC-member companies are granted a royalty-free, nonexclusive, worldwide license to intellectual property (IP) developed by the university performing the research services. The new partnership presents an optional, alternative licensing relationship between SRC and NCSU for mutually selected inventions developed under SRC sponsorship.

Under the new partnership, select SRC and university intellectual property rights are combined and licensed to SRC. By combining IP rights, commercialization and licensing value may be enhanced, as compared with the traditional SRC-university licensing model, the company said.

Terms of the experimental partnership were developed by David Winwood, NCSU director of the Office of Technology Transfer, and Frank Pita, SRC director of corporate legal affairs and IP counsel.

"SRC and NCSU believe this important partnership represents a new cooperative research and licensing partnership model for use between industry and universities," said Pita.

SRC sponsors research conducted at more than 74 universities in the U.S. and abroad in the semiconductor and related industries.
