NIST Supports Laser-Based Medical Implant Technology
Optomec Inc. of Albuquerque, N.M., has received a $2 million Advanced Technology Program award from the National Institute of Standards and Technology for its Laser Engineered Net Shaping system. The award will stimulate further development of the technology for use in the manufacture of medical implants and other titanium components. Titled "Economic Titanium Alloy Manufacture by Laser Deposition," the project will focus on improving the design and properties of medical implants using lightweight, high-strength titanium alloys with the aim of reducing costs and implant failures.
