KVH and ABB Collaborate on Optical Current Sensor

Under a product development agreement, KVH Industries will work with ABB's Power Technology Products Div. to design a fiber optic sensor for measuring the current in high-voltage power lines. Measurement devices now in use are oil- or gas-filled systems that produce analog outputs. The system under development is expected to enable instantaneous digital measurement and to be more accurate and smaller. In addition, fiber transmission of the sensor signal will provide insulation against high voltages.
