Agere Starts Volume Production of 3-D MEMS Optical Switch Components

ALLENTOWN, Pa., March 13 -- Communications components producer Agere Systems said it is the first company to start volume production of a 3D microelectromechanical systems (3D MEMS) optical switch component. This component has begun the process of qualification, expected to be complete this summer.

Chuck Mattera, vice president of optical core and metro networks for Agere Systems, said the company has been shipping samples of the modules to a number of top-tier customers since June 2001 and has received significant orders.
