The completion of the project expands the NEESCom fiber optic network to more than 200,000 fiber miles in four northeast states, connecting major metropolitan areas and assisting competitive telecommunications carriers to establish facilities-based networks throughout the region.
The facilities, commonly referred to as "regen" sites, provide the space necessary for competitive service providers to house the equipment necessary to run their networks. The new regen sites along NEESCom's Boston to Albany route will enable telecommunications carriers to connect cities such as Albany, New York and Providence, Rhode Island to Springfield, Worcester and Boston, Massachusetts without leaving the NEESCom dark fiber optic network.
