LITTLETON, Mass., May 25, 2006 -- Lambda Research Corp., developer of optical software including TracePro and TracePro Bridge for SolidWorks, announces the latest release of its lens design software, Oslo. The 6.4 release of Oslo has more than 40 additions and improvements over the 6.3.4 version, according to the company.

Among the highlights of the new Oslo 6.4 is the added capability to place multiple interferogram (INT) files on any optical model surface. Interferogram files can represent a different source and type of error, e.g. freeform wavefront or surface deviations. Placing multiple interferogram files on a surface allows Oslo 6.4 to perform fairly complex tolerance modeling to predict the as-built performance of real optical systems.Oslo6.4.jpg
The diagram represents typical errors that might be modeled with separate interferogram files: (A) "print-through" errors of a lightweighted mirror, (B) atmospheric turbulence, and (C) the composite error that would be found in the as-built system when interferograms A and B are combined.
Oslo’s implementation of separate interferogram files allows users to adjust the size and shape of individual errors in an easy and efficient way. Another highlight of Oslo 6.4, Lambda Research said, is the addition of a new anamorphic asphere surface type that extends the standard optical surface sag equation differently in both the X and Y directions. This addition will allow users to optimize general anamorphic surface shapes without the control problems usually associated with spline surfaces. Oslo 6.4 has also added an automatic check to ensure that users choose catalog glasses within appropriate wavelength ranges for their models. For example, users will now find it impossible to incorrectly use visible materials for infrared wavelength ranges, the company said.

With the 6.4 release, the Hikari, Hoya, Ohara, Schott, Sumita and Chengdu glass catalogs have been updated with new data, Lambda Research said. Hundreds of lenses have also been added to the vendor lens catalogs within Oslo, and data from many vendors such as Newport, Linos, CVI and Ealing have been updated. More robust ray tracing algorithms have been implemented for the case of severe offaxis rays entering a toric surface, and the size of the text window and spreadsheet buffers have been increased from 2000 to 4000 lines. Also, improvements have been made to the Linux version to bring it closer to the same standard as the Windows version.
