Hamamatsu Corp. has introduced the S9972 and S9973 series front-illuminated full-frame transfer CCDs, suitable for low-light-level detection in spectrometry, semiconductor inspection and DNA sequencing. The area image sensors offer line-binning operation, which boosts dynamic range typically to 120,000 and increases readout speed; and multiphase-pinned operation, which lowers dark current. They feature low readout noise, 24 × 24 μm pixels with 100% fill factor and a spectral response range of 400 to 1100 nm. The S9972 models are noncooled CCD sensors and use a quartz glass window, while the S9973 types have one-stage TE cooling and use a sapphire glass window.
