NASA Presents Phase 2 Tech Awards

NASA has selected 14 small high-technology businesses in eight states for Phase 2 of its 2004 Small Business Technology Transfer awards. The selected companies’ projects have a total value of approximately $8.4 million. Intended to continue development of the most promising Phase 1 projects, they are funded with contracts of up to $600,000 for a period of up to two years.

The program is designed in part to stimulate technological innovation and to increase the use of small businesses in meeting federal research and development requirements. It requires collaboration between a small company and a research institution.

Among the organizations awarded Phase 2 contracts are:

• AdTech Photonics Inc. of Industry, Calif., and the University of Maryland, Baltimore County in Baltimore for their proposal “High-Performance, Radiation-Hard, 2-D, Near-Infrared, Avalanche Photodiode Arrays.”

• Boston Applied Technologies Inc. of Woburn, Mass., and The Catholic University of America in Washington for “Polarization Imaging Apparatus for Cell and Tissue Imaging and Diagnostics.”

• TechnoVentures LLC of Silver Spring, Md., and the University of Maryland, College Park, for “GaN-Based Sensors for Earth Resources Management.”
