Until recently 442nm laser generation was provided exclusively by large, costly and cumbersome Helium-Cadmium gas lasers. He-Cd lasers provide good quality, low noise, single-frequency laser light but present considerable challenges in their design and prove to be difficult to maintain, primarily in laser beam pointing stability. These issues have now been solved with the launch of the world’s only 442nm solid state He-Cd laser alternative by Power Technology, Inc.
The Concerto® from Power Technology’s KLASTECH line of products utilizes their own proprietary design to deliver up to 150mW of actively stabilized single-frequency laser light with a spectral band width of < 5MHz. Typically a He-Cd laser will require a complete tube refurbishment every 3000 hours depending on the original power output. Solid state lasers do not require re-tubing. The Concerto® laser provides a clear cost advantage over traditional gas lasers and provides an added MTBF value of >12000 hours.
Gas lasers consume at least 500W of electricity, compared to less than 25W of electrical consumption by the Concerto® laser. The additional electricity in the gas laser creates heat in the local environment – a cause of angst in small laboratory spaces. Because of the Concerto’s lower power consumption, heat exchange is not an issue. This unit also features a small cooler plate that comes equipped with an ultra-silent fan. In addition, gas lasers tend to operate at a loud rate, something that the Concerto® does not do.
