MILPITAS, Calif., Jan. 27, 2012 — BAE Systems Imaging Solutions has introduced the Fairchild Imaging CIS1021 scientific CMOS (sCMOS) image sensor. As a high-definition camera component designed for collecting images through a microscope or other imaging system, the sensor chip can capture single molecules in the laboratory or stars in space by simultaneously providing high sensitivity and dynamic range, along with speed at high-definition TV (HDTV) resolution.
Scientists can capture all the data in a scene, from the faintest to the brightest target in an image. It is suitable for life sciences applications including live-cell microscopy, drug discovery and real-time polymerase chain reaction, as well as for physical science applications such as astronomy.
The CIS1021 captures images at speeds of up to 100 fps at full resolution, enabling users to collect more image information in a shorter period of time and to track events that cannot be detected with standard sensors. During live-cell or DNA sample examination, the high dynamic range allows scientists to collect both weak and strong signals from the same image, providing greater detail from bright or dim areas and capturing data without damaging the sample. When used in cell biology and drug discovery, it allows scientists to more efficiently identify ways to prevent or treat medical conditions.
In astronomy, sCMOS technology and the sensor can be useful in “lucky imaging,” where higher resolution reduces the blurring effects of atmospheric turbulence during capture of images of planets and stars through the Earth’s atmosphere.
The image sensor offers >88 dB of intra-scene dynamic range, captures images in an industry-standard 1920 × 1080 HDTV format, and is available in both monochrome and color versions.
OEM camera manufacturers can integrate it into a variety of imaging devices in the scientific segment and other markets such as border security, surveillance, aerospace, defense and medical imaging.
