The newest addition to the Genesis family of lasers for life sciences from Coherent Inc. is a streamlined model targeted at space-restricted OEM instrumentation applications.

The Genesis CX 355 STM Compact is a continuous-wave, 355-nm laser with TEM00 beam quality and is 50% smaller than its predecessors. It is available with output powers of up to 100 mW (standard model available up to 250 mW), and the laser head measures only 250 × 51 × 138 mm.

Based on proprietary optically pumped semiconductor laser (OPSL) technology, Genesis lasers are solid-state alternatives to ion models for applications requiring true continuous-wave ultraviolet output. Their advantages over ion lasers include solid-state stability and reliability, an order of magnitude increase in electrical efficiency, no need for water cooling, a compact footprint, and the ability to adjust (10% to100 %) output power with no effect on beam pointing or beam quality.

The OPSL technology enables ultralow noise of <0.1% (10 Hz to 100 MHz).

Applications include flow cytometry for cell sorting and counting, and other fluorescence-based life sciences techniques such as confocal microscopy and high-throughput drug discovery.
