Featuring Mohs 9 hardness, sapphire optics from Meller Optics Inc. can withstand deep water pressure up to 10,000 psi for outboard applications on undersea vehicles.

Sapphire optics have a hardness second only to diamonds, able to withstand fast-moving sand and salt water. A clear, smooth and flat surface helps prevent algae growth.

Available as windows, domes and truncated hyperhemispheres, the optics can be fabricated in sizes from 0.25 to 10 in. in diameter with varying wall thicknesses, elliptical-edge shaping and mounting options.
