IR Wire-Grid Polarizers

Photonics Spectra
Feb 2014
New high-contrast IR wire-grid polarizers from Edmund Optics are suitable for broadband IR applications requiring high transmission and contrast, including spectroscopy, thermal imaging and astronomy.

The polarizers are constructed by applying a thin layer of aluminum microwires to a glass window. Their design features a lightweight, thin silicon substrate, making them suitable for weight-sensitive systems such as unmanned aerial vehicles. The devices’ wire-grid technology allows the angle of incidence to vary more than 20° without exhibiting performance loss.

Providing high heat resistance with low thermal expansion, the antireflection-coated polarizers are suitable for polarizing light from IR laser sources or for attenuating light from polarized IR lasers. Six models are available in 12.5 × 12.5-mm, 12 × 25-mm and 50 × 50-mm sizes for 3- to 5-µm or 7- to 15-µm wavelengths.
