Camera Shutters
A camera shutter is an apparatus, designed for use with a camera, that is used to rapidly open the path from lens to film, to maintain the opening throughout exposure and to close the opening in rapid succession. The time of exposure depends on a spinning gear and pallet arrangement, but electronic timers are capable of exposure times from about 10 s down to 1/1000 s. For the shorter exposures, a single set of double-ended blades may be used, or two sets of blades, one to open and one to close the aperture. Many cameras employ focal plane shutters in which two curtains or thin metal blinds, which form a slot, move across immediately in front of the film, the width of the slot being adjustable to control the length of exposure. For the shortest exposures, a Kerr cell shutter may be used.
