Parametric Oscillators
A parametric oscillator is a device using a parametric amplifier inside a resonant optical cavity to generate a frequency-tunable coherent beam of light from an intense laser beam of fixed frequency. This device is tuned by varying the phase-matching properties of the nonlinear material.

  • optical parametric oscillator (OPO) A laser-pumped crystal with nonlinear optical properties that generates coherent light whose output can be tuned continuously over a variety of infrared and visible wavelengths.
  • nonlinear optical crystal An optical crystal that possesses a strong nonlinear dielectric response function to optical radiation. A material with a strong second-order nonlinearity must not possess a center of symmetry. See phase matching.
