OCT in Dermatology Training Opens in Bonn

Private medical center Medizinisches Zentrum Bonn Friedensplatz will offer the first training workshop for clinicians on the use and applications of optical coherence tomography (OCT) in dermatology.

The one-day workshop this summer will train clinicians on how to interpret OCT images of skin and how to use the information to aid and improve their care of patients’ skin conditions, especially for nonmelanoma skin cancer. It will be directed by professor Uwe Reinhold, president of the Onkoderm network of top German skin cancer clinics and lead dermatologist at the Medizinisches Zentrum Bonn.

Reinhold’s clinic has routinely used Michelson Diagnostic’s VivoSight multibeam OCT scanner system since the beginning of the year, scanning more than 100 patients.

“We have found OCT imaging particularly useful for nonmelanoma skin cancer, and our patients really appreciate this service because they get a fast and reliable diagnosis without taking a biopsy,” he said. “I believe it will become a widely used technique in Germany, and this training workshop will help spread the knowledge and understanding of OCT.”

OCT provides detailed real-time images of subsurface skin tissue at much higher resolution than is possible with ultrasound and other standard imaging modalities, by using a low-power laser scanning device.

Glossary
optical coherence tomography
Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a non-invasive imaging technique used in medical and scientific fields to capture high-resolution, cross-sectional images of biological tissues. It provides detailed, real-time, and three-dimensional visualization of tissue structures at the micrometer scale. OCT is particularly valuable in ophthalmology, cardiology, dermatology, and various other medical specialties. Here are the key features and components of optical coherence tomography: Principle of...
photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
