AUBURN, Mass., May 23, 2012 — PI (Physik Instrumente L.P.) says that its M-687 motorized X-Y stage for inverted microscopes is more compact and stable than traditional computer-controllable stages because of the miniature ceramic linear motors that drive it. The system is supplied with a controller, a joystick and software.
The self-clamping ceramic/ceramic linear motors in the positioner are more compact than electromagnetic motors and provide higher stability. Once they are in place, they consume no energy to hold position (no heat dissipation), have no leadscrews that heat up due to friction during motion and that cause drift cooling down once the motion stops, and there is no creep caused by lubricant flow in the drive mechanism.
Integrated 100-nm-resolution linear encoders provide direct position feedback to the controller, enabling closed-loop operation with high accuracy.
Accessories include slide holders, petri dish holders, multiwell plate holders and high-speed Piezo-Z nanopositioning stages for 3-D microscopy, image stack acquisition and fast autofocus.
The low-profile X-Y stage has a large aperture and maintains constant velocity, even at speeds down to 10 μm/s. Versions for Olympus IX2 and Nikon Eclipse Ti inverted microscopes are available.
Travel range is up to 135 × 85 mm, and speeds are up to 120 mm/s.
For inverted microscopes, the design allows for free rotation of the turret. The stage is suitable for long-exposure imaging and image stitching.
